I have been chasing people both at the MIT Technology Licensing Office
for quite some time on this account. The person I used to deal with
left, and now I'm pestering her replacement. All the technical folk
are fine with this. I've even lined up an 8 track drive to read the
tapes with

It would be either 9 or 7 track. If the technology licensing office
HAS a tape, there are people at MIT who can read it, assuming it's
9 track. If it is 7 track, it can still be read but it will have
to be sent to the west coast.

This assumes that it hasn't deteriorated to the point where it
CAN'T be read. Early 80s tape formulations (esp Memorex and BASF)
have developed a problem where the layers stick together and rips
the oxide off as you attempt to unwind it.
