This is probably the best option.  Then all you need is a crossover
(null-modem) serial cable and another computer running a terminal
program.  The terminal program can keep a log and you can spew an
arbitrary amount of data out the serial port.

And AFAIK all you need to do is get the serial port up and tell it to
run at 9600-8-N-1, then spew bytes at it.

Of course, if you have a bug in the serial port support then you're
screwed.  So make sure that works right before anything else.
