We had one, in a 21-slot chassis the size of a washing machine, and I
know we had at least one customer, but I don't know how many total were
shipped. I think ours had four processors, and was used for research in
parallel processing (a part of my career I had forgotten).
You can read all about one use of multi-processor Explorers in John
Koza's "Genetic Programming" book. Aside from all of the interesting
information on his genetic programming system, somewhere towards the
back of the book you'll find a brief description of his hardware setup
and all sorts of nifty screen shots from his W-based user interfaces.
(I have no idea if the publicly available GP code uses shared areas or
not).
